3 Tips on How to Prepare for a Better Year

2018 was a whirlwind of a year for me. Even as I type this, my heart is getting heavy and my eyes filled with tears because I loss my dad this year. Some days I live on a cloud of beautiful memories of my dad and other days all I feel is a dark cloud hovering over me. I am grateful that more often than not, I am at peace but the reality of his passing is still a very painful thing.

You know, life moves so fast and I often feel I have kept up with life so much I think I don’t spend enough time mourning. Other times, I feel I don’t want to get stuck in grief; as you can see, it’s a battle. I am sharing this with you because I want you to know that we all experience trials, we all experience hardship but we all have the wherewithal to fight and overcome.

2019 is here and you either feel excited about this New Year or you don’t. Perhaps 2018 didn’t go the way you desired. Maybe you were up against a lot of challenges that you have yet to overcome. Maybe you’re battling with anxiety and depression about the New Year because you feel nothing has been going your way. I’m not sure what your struggles or fears are and I don’t have a quick-fix-solution but I will like to offer you some advice.

I want to share with you what I did to make 2018 a success; let’s start with a quote from my blog post entitled “How to Make 2018 A Success“, that I wrote at the top of the year .

If you want this year to be better than last year, you have to bury those thoughts of yourself that keep you bound! No more thinking you are less than. No more thinking you have to sacrifice your morals to obtain things. No more thinking that man holds power over you. No more fear. No more doubt. No more speaking death over yourself. No more allowing others to kill your vision. No more connecting to people that you know will hinder you. Let’s leave this right here and right now!

One: A Mindset Shift

In order to shift your new year into better you have to shift your mind into better. How do you think about yourself and your new year? There’s a scripture in 2 Corinthians 5:17  that says: “Old things have passed away and behold all things are become new”. The word BEHOLD means to fix attention upon an object; to attend; to direct or fix the mind. So with that, fix your mind on all things becoming new, set your attention on new opportunities, new relationships, new resources, new skills, and new open doors. I am not telling you to forget what happened to you, that would be unrealistic, what I am saying is: fix your attention on the good vs. the “bad”.

Two: Set 2019 Life Themes

The reason why most of us feel stuck is because we haven’t discovered our purpose. Jeremiah 1:5 says God knew us in our mother’s womb; no purpose of yours is hidden from Your Creator. We haven’t taken the time to seek Our Heavenly Father to uncover it. We are going and going and have no clue what we were created to do; this is frustrating.

When I hear people shift from being stuck to setting goals for themselves, they often rush to burden themselves with a million things; don’t be these people. Don’t overwhelm yourself by writing down 10 goals you plan to accomplish for the New Year; you’ll leave room for much disappointment if you aren’t able to complete your laundry list of goals!

Instead of setting a million goals, I set a theme for 2018 which was: CONSISTENCY.

Here are some themes you can set for yourself in 2019:

  • LOVE

I declared that I would be consistent in one to two areas of my life. Matthew 25:23 says: “…Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things…” I declared that I would be consistent in one to two areas of my life. We cannot do everything; I know I cannot, so instead of trying to accomplish a lot of stuff, I made a plan to be consistent with posting daily and my newsletter. So many people have commended me for my consistency. I am not saying this to brag but rather show you that you do not have to do everything; my small efforts of faithfulness showed my consistency. I didn’t overwhelm myself with creating content and blogging because I threw away the laundry list. I promised myself I would post content on Instagram daily and I would send out my newsletter weekly; I did these two things and they paid off tremendously. My Instagram following grew by nearly 7K organic followers this year and my newsletter grew to 400 subscribers. You can subscribe to my newsletter here.

If I can throw one word at you today that will be helpful in making 2019 your year of success, it would be SACRIFICE. This may mean waking up earlier, working weekends, staying up late, skipping out on that event, or putting your phone down for a few days to focus. Nothing I have obtained, fell from the sky; everything I’ve experienced was through faith, discipline, and/or sacrifice.

Three: What Are You Going to Do About It?

So now you’ve set a theme for your 2019. This is what you will march towards in everything that you do. You will make sure that your actions line up with your theme. Throughout the year you will reflect on your life, goals, and priorities and make sure that they align with the theme. Is this thing helping me heal? Is this opportunity helping me build? Am I putting in enough effort in this area of my life? Is this relationship going to help me grow?

Now set one or two actions that will help you live out your 2019 theme. My theme is: EXPAND. In order for me to expand I need to:

  1. Maximize on opportunities through fostering relationships.
  2. Budget

So here’s your moment. You feel more empowered to enter this year, let us pray:

God, I expect you to do unimaginable things for me in 2019 but I realize you are waiting for me to move. No longer will I allow destructive thinking or low self-worth hold me back. I will seek you for my purpose, set a theme for my life, and open myself up to the possibilities of you blowing my mind. I know you have great things in store for me, your word says it; today, I declare I am walking into them. I pray for your protection in 2019, your covering, your healing, and your power to be the person that you’ve created me to be. No more holding back. No more standing still. No more fear and no more doubt. I thank you in advance for the blessings and the glory that’s to come.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
