Getting Access to NYFW

This was my first NYFW in 4 years! When I started in this industry, I worked backstage as a model dresser for the shows; this was the only way I knew how to experience the thrill of fashion week. You can’t imagine the excitement I felt as I would wake up at sunrise and run to Lincoln Center for the shows (who remembers the tents ?). Get ready for a really embarrassing photo of me at one of my first fashion shows:

As the years went on, my thrill for Fashion Week began to slowly dwindle; I stopped seeing a benefit from attending but this year was very different. I was able to meet and connect with so many great people, brands, and PR agencies. My IG following grew by +8% simply by collaborations and content produced during #NYFW.

Getting Into The Shows:

So, how do you get into NYFW shows? Here are three resource you can uses and keys to help you along the way.

  1. GPS Radar  – this is your access key to NYFW. GPS Radar by Launchmetrics is a community where influencers, industry professionals, and creatives are able to connect with brands, media, and retailers. In order to register for GPS Radar you must have a business/professional email that is i.e. Once you are registered for GPS Radar, you then have access to most all NYFW shows, invites, and PR contacts. The best way to approach PR agencies is to either directly request an invitation through GPS Radar or use the PR contact information to send them an email. Tip: when sending an email to PR agencies remember that they are looking for individuals who will compose quality content for their designers during/after the shows. If you have any previous fashion week content, this is a bonus,  include this in the email you send to them. I will talk about how to compose the email in a later post!
  2. Make Friends – As simple as it sounds, this is another key to getting into fashion shows. So here’s how it works: PR agencies send out invites to their mailing list contacts for the shows. Some people’s inboxes are flooded with invites to shows they simple cannot attend but guess who can: YOU. The invites are transferable at the official NYFW venue *this is our little secret. If you meet someone in the industry, spark a conversation with them, ask them what shows they are attending and express your interest in attending shows. If they are generous enough, they will email you their barcode! This is how I attended the Concept Korea Show at Spring Studios!
  3. Modem Online – Modem Online is similar to GPS Radar however it is not an exclusive site; you do not need special access. Modem Online houses the majority of Press Agencies’ contact information and NYFW schedules. Tip: Start building a relationship with PR agencies before fashion week! Reach out to these agencies and inquire about events they are having throughout the city that you may want to attend and write QUALITY content about! If the fashion week schedule has already been posted, take some time to write those emails and tell them a little about what you do and your interest in attending the shows. Tip from an industry professional: If you have a blog, when composing your email refer to yourself as the editor of your blog NOT a blogger.

This was super helpful. I’ve been invited to shows in the past through hair care brands working with the designers but recently got on the list for Style FW to attend a few shows. I have been wondering about other shows, though, so thank you for this info!

This was great information Sade! It’s been years since I was at NYFW and for some reason, this year, I missed it more than ever! It’s great to finally find a way to include and prepare myself for next year!
